Hourglass Lying Down

Hourglass Lying Down

May 4 - June 8, 2024

Opening Reception: Saturday, May 4, 2024 | 4pm

Hourglass Lying Down is a group exhibition of work by sleepers, snackers, thinkers, dreamers, mothers, walkers, laughers, criers, lovers and actors. Each attuned to some distinctive current, these artists uniquely process the chaotic swirl of known reality, breathe it in, swish it around in a glass, poke holes, stare into it, juggle and wrestle and toss it against the surface of water like skipped stones until it settles; an embodied reconciliation, as some object, abstraction, vignette or moment.

Hourglass Lying Down (Sablier Couche) borrows its name from a poem by Surrealist artist Alice Rahon and includes painting, collage, ceramic sculpture and performance stills. The exhibition includes work by Sofia Arnold, Klara Glosova, Autumn Knight and Serrah Russell, each varied in their transcriptions and practices, but whose works share a quality of subconscious texture and illustrative rebellion. Touching on themes of containment, expansion, ascent and emotional current, these attuned interpretations gesture at absurdity, propose alternatives and offer potent reflection with humor, paint, clay, paper and movement.
